Phase 1 Online Games

These free online games will be useful for Phase 1 of the Letters and Sounds phonics programme. Most of the games will work well on an interactive whiteboard as well as for individual play on a computer or tablet. To play a game, just click the picture or title and it will open in a new window or tab:

Match Sounds

Click the speaker to hear an animal sound, then drag the matching animal onto the speaker. This game from Phonics Bloom aims to promote discussion of different sounds between a child and adult.

Sound Starters

Click any of the bubbles to hear a random sound. Some are real sounds and others are funny sound effects. Some start off quietly and gradually get louder, some are long and some are short so there’s lots to talk about. See teaching ideas for this game from Phonics Play.

Welcome to the Zoo

In this game there is an animal hidden in the crate. You will hear the noise that it makes and you have to decide which animal it is. See teaching ideas for this game from Phonics Play.

Environmental Sounds Game

This video from Love2Learn with Miss Ellis is great for Phase 1 listening. Miss Ellis plays a sound, then waits for the children to guess what it is before she reveals the answer. You can of course pause the video so that you have plenty of time to talk about the sound.

Listening Game Quiz

Another video game with interesting sounds, this one is from Learning Hats. Is it a plane? A helicopter? No, it’s a ticking clock. A choice of three pictures is provided for each sound, so if you’re using it as a whole-class activity, children can hold up 1, 2 or 3 fingers to show which sound they think it is.

Guess the Musical Instrument

Listen to the sounds of the instruments and see if you can guess which instrument is playing. A video listening game from Twinkl Kids’ TV.

BBC School Radio Listening Skills

This collection of audio from the BBC School is a series of 15 programmes 8-10 minutes long. Children are encouraged to listen carefully to identify sounds and to respond in a variety of ways, including both speech and movement. Each programme can be downloaded as an mp3 audio file, or played online. Teachers’ Notes and transcripts are also provided.
